Whitesnake were an English rock band formed in London in 1978. The group was originally assembled as the backing band for singer David Coverdale following his departure from Deep Purple. Although the band developed into an independent entity, Coverdale remained the only constant member throughout its history. After releasing the EP "Snakebite" in 1978, Whitesnake issued the studio albums "Trouble" (1978) and "Lovehunter" (1979), which featured songs that became concert staples, including "Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City" and "Walking in the Shadow of the Blues". The band established a following in the United Kingdom, Europe, and Japan, and their subsequent releases "Ready an' Willing" (1980), "Live... in the Heart of the City" (1980), "Come an' Get It" (1981), and "Saints & Sinners" (1982) all reached the top ten on the UK Albums Chart. By the mid-1980s, Coverdale sought to expand the band’s presence in North America, where they had previously achieved limited recognition. With
