Paul Bruce Dickinson (born 7 August 1958) is an English singer best known as the lead vocalist of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. He has performed with the band during two periods, from 1981 to 1993 and from 1999 onward. Dickinson is noted for his wide vocal range and theatrical stage presence. Dickinson began his musical career in the 1970s performing with local pub bands while attending school in Sheffield and later studying at university in London. In 1979 he joined the British new wave heavy metal band Samson, performing under the stage name Bruce Bruce and appearing on two studio albums with the group. He left Samson in 1981 to join Iron Maiden, replacing Paul Di'Anno. His first album with the band was "The Number of the Beast" in 1982. During his initial tenure with Iron Maiden, the band released a number of commercially successful albums throughout the 1980s and early 1990s. In 1993 Dickinson left Iron Maiden and was replaced by Blaze Bayley. He subsequently focused on a solo
